New in Midnight (12.1)

Altar of Fangs

Timer 29 min3 bossesWidely regarded as a dungeon that demands mechanical mastery over item level — most failures come from coordination checks (the full-party movement on boss 2, the beam soak assignments on boss 3) rather than damage checks. Korean community feedback also notes that highlighted (orange) mobs hit very hard, making defensives and healing crucial, and that the dungeon is difficult with players who do not know the mechanics. Controlled pulls are rewarded over mindless mass pulling.

A new Mythic+ dungeon in Midnight (12.1) Season 2, located at the entrance to the Vaults of Atal'Utek — an ancient troll (Amani) temple on The Coiled Isle. Thousands of years ago the Amani tribe sealed the vaults with this altar, and the story follows Zul'jan attempting to return the Fang of Ula'tek to the altar to control its power. The dungeon has three bosses — Rav'i, The Writhing Coil, then Zul'jan — with a 29-minute keystone timer. Defeating Zul'jan can reward The Writhing Brood mount (Mythic/Mythic+ only), plus a hidden achievement and the Silkfang battle pet.

Researched early in the season. Unconfirmed details are marked as such in the text.

Dispels

  • Mass Envenom (cast by Ula'tek's Chosen and High Evolutionist) — healer should be ready with magic/poison dispels

Dangerous Trash Patterns

  • Detailed route information for each section is still scarce this early in the season, but the dangerous mobs and interrupt/dispel priorities are cross-confirmed across sources.
  • The must-interrupt list is the top cause of avoidable deaths — set up a kick rotation instead of everyone dumping interrupts on the first cast.
  • Ravenous Descendant: its stacking attack speed buff will delete the tank. Reset the stacks with stuns or break them with short kiting. It puts heavy melee pressure on the tank, so never pull multiples at once.
  • Ascendant Serpent: continuously summons Hatchlings with Infest — top priority kill target. This elite in the section after boss 2 cannot be skipped (mandatory kill).
  • Ritual Chieftain: creates tank/healer pressure with Blood Sacrifice.
  • Caustic Mist Totem: a destructible totem — break it quickly to clear the ground effects.
  • Stick to the kick rotation (especially Envenom and Piercing Hiss).
  • Prioritize killing summons such as Hatchlings.
  • Stay out of poison pools.

Bosses

Boss 1

Rav'i

A ravenous hydra. The core is feeding control — Carrion Piles litter the arena, and when Rav'i runs out of energy it rushes to the nearest Carrion Pile and begins Ssscavenging, gaining a large damage-absorb shield. If that pile contains Fresh Meat, it enters Feeding Frenzy — an empowered version dealing AoE damage (Carrion Burst) every 1.5 seconds, plus a +30% attack speed debuff against the tank. Breaking the shield stops it immediately.

Key Mechanics

  • Ravenous StompAoE damage plus falling debris (move out of the ground markers). New Fresh Meat drops during this.
  • Triple ShotPoison projectiles on 3 targets plus ground pools — spread out.
  • RegurgitateThree consecutive acid waves — dodge them (some sources say it is interruptible).
  • Mythic+ addition — Messy EaterThe flying meat chunks must be intercepted (soaked), not dodged, to prevent extra Carrion Bursts.
  • When the shield appears, everyone swaps to the boss immediately and breaks it as fast as possible — this is the burst window.
  • In Mythic+, split up the meat chunk soaks, spread for Triple Shot, and dodge the acid waves.

Boss 2

The Writhing Coil

The biggest coordination check in the dungeon and the number one wipe boss. Death Rattle deals AoE damage that stacks and grows every second, and the only way to stop it is resolving Vine Grip — the whole party gets tethered to the boss, and every party member must sprint 10+ yards outward at the same time to snap the tethers, transitioning the boss into the Uncoil phase. If even one player does not move, Death Rattle keeps growing until the party wipes. Announce in advance that this is a mechanic you solve by running, not by healing through it.

Key Mechanics

  • Toxic AtrophyThree consecutive casts after Preparing Toxin — each one that gets through reduces party damage by 15% and movement speed by 10%. Pre-assign a dedicated kick rotation for this boss.
  • Tail ScytheHeavy tank damage — answer with cooldowns.
  • Venom JetFrontal breath — keep the boss's frontal arc clear.
  • Burrowing ChargeA straight-line burrowing charge — dodge it.
  • Synchronized VenomAoE damage plus a 35-second DoT.
  • Mythic+ addition — Spiteful HuntDuring Uncoil, a freed serpent (Uncoiled Writhe) fixates on one player; touching it applies a stacking DoT plus a damage reduction — kite it, do not tank it.
  • Honor the Toxic Atrophy kick assignments (three consecutive casts, so rotate at least 2-3 players).
  • Pool burst cooldowns for the Uncoil window — damage dealt during Uncoil persists even after Assimilation.
  • If targeted by Spiteful Hunt, kite.

Boss 3

Zul'jan

The final boss — a composite fight of beam soaks, poison stack management, and ground effect management. The core loop is Ritual of the Fang: four serpent heads at the edge of the arena channel beams toward Zul'jan (the Fang of Ula'tek) for 8 seconds. Each unblocked beam grants Zul'jan a Fang Empowered stack — a permanent AoE damage increase, so every miss makes the fight harder for the rest of the pull. Pre-assign the four soak positions before pulling. Anyone who body-blocks a beam gains Ritual Venom — lasts 50 seconds and deals large explosion damage on expiry.

Key Mechanics

  • Venom removal 1 — BloodlettingZul'jan's physical attacks cause bleeding that removes Ritual Venom stacks, but each proc leaves a blood pool on the ground — manage positioning so pools are dropped at the arena edges.
  • Venom removal 2 — BoneslicerA thrown axe (armor-ignoring damage). Deliberately soaking it while you have Ritual Venom stacks removes all stacks at once — the primary management tool in Mythic+. Never take it with zero stacks.
  • AxegrinderA spinning axe that ricochets around the arena — a pure movement check; contact deals heavy damage plus a slow.
  • Chop DownA two-hit tank strike — defensives/externals mandatory.
  • Hold your assigned beam position (missing a soak for the sake of damage is the worst mistake).
  • With Ritual Venom stacks, clear them by soaking Boneslicer; with no stacks, dodge it — this distinction alone greatly reduces healing pressure.
  • Dodge the Axegrinder's path.

General Tips

  • Three things to brief before the pull: (1) the Toxic Atrophy kick rotation on boss 2, (2) the four beam assignments on boss 3, (3) announce that Death Rattle means everyone runs.
  • Route convention: click every totem in the first area to unlock the path to Rav'i. Keep the +5% damage buff up by clicking Cursed Bones while moving. The Ascendant Serpent elite after boss 2 cannot be skipped. (Optimal routes are still being established this early in the season — limited information.)
  • Hidden buff — Cursed Bones: clicking the clickable bones scattered around the dungeon summons a Soothed Amani Spirit that increases damage taken by nearby enemies by 1% (up to 5 stacks = +5%). Assign the clicks to the healer or a ranged DPS with spare time for a free damage amplifier.
  • Bloodlust timing: no confirmed convention in the sources yet (limited information). Mechanically, the boss 2 Uncoil window (damage persists after Assimilation) or the boss 3 opener are the likely candidates — judge by party composition.
  • Common mistakes: tanking Rav'i next to Fresh Meat, one player not running during Vine Grip, missing Toxic Atrophy kicks, standing in Regurgitate or Axegrinder paths, pulling multiple Ravenous Descendants, taking Boneslicer with no venom stacks, and prioritizing the damage meter over priority mechanics.
  • Reward efficiency: Hero Mistcrests from +4, Mythic Mistcrests from +9 (not +10). End-of-dungeon loot item level caps at +10 (311, Hero 3/6) — pure farming efficiency sweet spot is +10.
