At a Glance

Unholy Death Knight is a two-handed melee DPS built around diseases and pet damage. Your body damage, the diseases ticking on the target, the temporary Army of the Dead minions, and your permanent ghoul all share the damage load — so single-target damage builds up over time and AoE explodes through disease spread. The spec is especially strong in Mythic+ and multi-target environments.

Why This Stat Priority

Unholy leans heavily on DoT and pet damage, so Haste and Mastery typically lead the priority. Haste accelerates Rune regeneration and ability cycling, while Mastery scales Shadow damage and pet damage together — both core sources of Unholy damage. Crit and Versatility follow, but trinket and tier effects can shift the order, so sim with your actual build or check the meta gear distribution before locking in.

Tier Set Notes

DK tier sets typically grant a small passive bonus at 2-piece (extra Rune generation, extra Runic Power, extra damage) and a meaningful upgrade at 4-piece on Army of the Dead, the ghoul, or one of your main damage abilities. When the 4-piece is strong, the BIS list shifts heavily toward set pieces; chasing non-set BIS while your 4-piece is incomplete is usually a real loss.

Trinket Selection

Unholy's damage curve back-loads, which makes passive trinkets that trigger off DoTs and pet counts strong on average. Active trinkets with clear single-target burst windows hold their own too. In AoE, trinkets that align with your Army window can boost average damage significantly. Split your pick by the content ratio you actually play (raid vs Mythic+).

Farming Path

Your two-handed weapon and your 4-piece set are Unholy's biggest single upgrades. First week: prioritize weapon-dropping bosses and run Mythic+ in parallel to fill missing tier slots. After the 4-piece, work on closing the item-level gap on trinkets and non-set slots. If you have crafting knowledge, applying it to a two-hander or embellished slot is usually the highest average upgrade per Spark.

When to Break BIS

(1) Weapon item-level gap is large — the higher-ilvl weapon almost always wins. (2) 4-piece is incomplete — leave non-set BIS empty and equip set pieces first. (3) Mostly Mythic+ — adjust trinkets and enchants toward AoE triggers. (4) Mostly raid — favor single-target options and DoT-extension effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frost DK or Unholy DK — which is better?

It varies patch to patch, but Unholy's strong AoE and DoT stacking tend to keep it competitive in Mythic+ environments, while Frost's clearer single-target burst windows often give it the edge on single-target raid bosses. Match your choice to the content you actually play and check the BISPath meta gear page distributions.

How should I time the alignment of Apocalypse and Army of the Dead?

The core principle is to align Army of the Dead with the boss's long damage windows. Since the ghoul is a permanent pet, you only need to time Apocalypse so that it overlaps with Army. Aligning Army with your 4-piece amplifier or with movement/vulnerability windows on the boss yields the largest average DPS gain — read the boss timeline ahead of time and pre-plan your first Army usage.
