At a Glance
Fire Mage is a caster DPS built around the Hot Streak proc, the Ignite Mastery DoT, and the Combustion burst window. Outside the burst window you fish for crits with Fireball/Scorch to trigger Hot Streak, fire instant Pyroblasts from those procs, and stack Ignite damage on the target. Roughly every 2 minutes you press Combustion to make all your fire spells effectively crit for a window, then cycle Pyroblasts and instant tools as fast as possible to deliver a huge burst.
Why This Stat Priority
Fire's average DPS depends on both rotation cycling speed and crit-driven Hot Streak frequency, so Haste and Crit are almost always the top stats. Haste raises cast and GCD speed for more spells inside Combustion, while Crit raises both Hot Streak proc rate and Ignite stacking. Mastery (Ignite) and Versatility follow, with order depending on build.
Tier Set Notes
Mage tier sets typically grant a small key-ability buff at 2-piece and a meaningful effect on the burst window or a core ability at 4-piece (extra triggers, resource generation, extended damage). When the 4-piece is strong, BIS pulls hard toward set pieces; non-set BIS can look temporarily inflated before completion. Hold the 4-piece-first rule.
Trinket Selection
Fire's burst windows (Combustion) are clearly telegraphed, so on-use trinkets aligned with them perform well in single target. AoE-triggered passives raise average damage in multi-target environments. Plain Intellect-heavy trinkets hold their own at the same item level — cross-check meta distributions.
Farming Path
Fire's biggest single upgrades are your weapon and your 4-piece set. First week: prioritize weapon-dropping bosses and run Mythic+ in parallel to fill missing tier slots. After the 4-piece, climb in the order trinkets → non-set ilvl → gems and enchants. Crafted upgrades go to a weapon or embellished slot first.
When to Break BIS
(1) Weapon item-level gap is large — always pick the higher-ilvl weapon. (2) 4-piece is incomplete — set pieces first. (3) Burst-aligned build — short-cooldown actives take priority. (4) Heavy AoE content — adjust trinkets toward multi-target triggers.
Frequently Asked Questions
I heard Fire is weak outside the burst window — is that true?
Partly. Fire leans heavily on the damage stacked inside Combustion, so its average output between windows is more average than most other casters. That makes pre-planning your Combustion alignments around boss vulnerable phases or transition windows more critical for Fire than for almost any other caster.
How does Hot Streak feed into instant Pyroblasts?
Hot Streak procs after two consecutive Fire spell crits (going through the Heating Up → Hot Streak chain). Once it's active, your next Pyroblast becomes instant cast with zero cast time. The general loop is (1) fish for crits with Fireball/Scorch to fill the proc, (2) press Combustion or other priority spells while the proc is up, and (3) fire the instant Pyroblast at the right beat. Understanding the Heating Up → Hot Streak chain is the single biggest skill jump for Fire DPS.
